Election campaigning for the forthcoming presidential elections in Kazakhstan completed at midnight on April 1. April 2 is the Day of Silence before the voting day. Kazakhstan’s legislation prohibits any campaigning in the day preceding the elections. According to the Election Law campaigning starts the moment the candidates’ registration time runs out and finishes one day before the elections. The last day before the elections must be completely free of all kinds of campaigning. But printed campaigning material posted outside of the elections commission offices and polling stations at earlier dates don’t have to be immediately removed and may remain in place. Four presidential candidates are running for the office in Kazakhstan: Communist Party chief Zhambyl Akhmetbekov, head of Tabigat ecological union Mels Yeleusizov, leader of the Party of Patriots Senator Gani Kasymov and the incumbent president Nursultan Nazarbayev. The elections will take place tomorrow on April 3. Voting will start at 7 a.m. and finish at 8 p.m. local time. At least 1059 foreign observers and 90 foreign journalists are expected to monitor the elections.
